For those of you who aren't actors, you might have heard mention of self-tapes. Actors no longer need to travel to London or Manchester (or even a different country) to meet casting directors, but instead can record a tape from the comfort of their own home - we won't mention the shoving everything from one side of the room to the other, wrestling their backdrop and aiming any and all houselights in one's general direction...
Self-tapes are a good thing, it means you can record them in your own time, you don't have to spend money travelling to the audition or take time off work etc. However, if you live alone, or your partner/parent/housemate isn't an actor, it can sometimes be challenging to your relationship to have them read in the other lines for you as you try and summon up similar emotions to your character and you keep forgetting one line in particular over and over again.
Enter, We Audition. There are actors all over the world signed up to the website, and there is always someone available at any time of the day to help you record. They can likely do the accents you need for your piece and can offer insights and coaching tips for the little things you might have missed because no matter how much you prep there is always more to be found in a script (unless it's a procedural role and you really just need to say the one line and get out).
I've been a reader on it for over a year and it's been so much fun. I get to meet people from all over the world (in case you don't know me, I am a people person), read new scripts all the time, and challenge your sight-reading skills diving in to help other actors. Being a reader means you also get to watch amazing performances, seeing people knock it out of the park on their tapes, giving beautiful, simple performances that at that point in time, you're the only witness to.
All this to say, I would highly recommend getting on WeAudition if you are an actor who wants to maintain good relationships with your loved ones, or if you would like to have fun as you earn some cash!
Every now and then I like to gather together all my recorded mistakes and make a little compilation out of them...strong language warning!
